Procurement Process
Genzyme makes it simple to procure EPICEL, and help is available every step of the way. To contact an EPICEL representative please call 800-CEA-SKIN (800-232-7546). To request EPICEL surgical guidelines click here.
Step 1: Request a Kit. After establishing patient eligibility, request a free Skin Biopsy Transport Kit by calling 800-CEA-SKIN (800-232-7546). There is no financial obligation for the biopsy kit or for taking the biopsy and starting the cell culture process. Kits can be requested at any time so you are prepared for your next patient. Kits can be usually delivered in 24 hours.
Step 2: Procure the Biopsy. Procure the necessary biopsy according to the directions enclosed with the biopsy kit and EPICEL Surgical Guidelines. For more information about the biopsy, see steps for success. Ship the biopsy and required information to Genzyme as directed. Genzyme will dispatch a courier to transport the box for immediate culture. There is no cost or financial obligation for biopsy kit transport or starting the cell culture process.
Step 3: Preparation of EPICEL. Upon receipt of the biopsy, Genzyme will begin the process of making EPICEL from the patient’s skin. The time in culture depends on patient-specific criteria, but normally takes about 16-21 days. The surgeon will receive two grafting offer dates, which are usually the earliest dates that grafts can be made available. If neither of these dates is acceptable, Genzyme will work with the surgeon to provide alternative dates that fit into the patient’s treatment plan, or the cells can be cryopreserved in liquid nitrogen until needed.
Step 4: Delivery of EPICEL. Grafts are hand-delivered by a Genzyme representative directly to the operating area, immediately before the scheduled operative session. The representative will stay during the operative session as a product resource.
