How EPICEL is Unique

EPICEL is a direct result of the pioneering work done in the 1970s by James Reinwald, Ph.D. and Howard Green, M.D. (Rheinwald and Green) in their lab at MIT1. It is still made using the manufacturing process developed by Rheinwald and Green, by highly trained professionals in the cell processing facility of Genzyme in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Genzyme is one of the world’s premier biotech companies, dedicated to making a positive impact on patients’ lives, and to providing superior customer service to both patients and healthcare professionals.

EPICEL is a treatment for burn wounds that engrafts and grows. Because it is made from a patient’s own skin, rejection is not an issue. EPICEL is used immediately upon receipt, so there are no issues with spoilage.

  • EPICEL requires only one biopsy procedure which can typically be performed at bedside under local anesthesia.
  • Using the initial biopsies, enough EPICEL grafts can be grown to cover the entire body in just 3-4 weeks.
  • Once the initial biopsy is processed, cells are cryopreserved and Epicel can be made available in two weeks. Also, you never have to send additional biopsy samples for your patient.
